Vladimir Voldemort Putin defends JK Rowling against “cancel culture”
For most sensible people being defended by an evil dictator like Vladimir Putin would probably serve as a wake-up call: “You are on the wrong side of history, my friend!” JK Rowling does not see that, however.
Vladimir Putin recently defended Rowling in a speech condemning “cancel culture” in the west. Putin argued that Rowling had been “cancelled” because of her anti-transgender activism.
Putin is, of course, a homophobe and a transphobe, using many of the same arguments against trans people as the ones presented by Rowling.
“They are now trying to cancel our country,” Putin continued, using another argument from the far right’s playbook: “I’m talking about the progressive discrimination of everything to do with Russia.”
Now, let me be absolutely clear here: Rowling is not a supporter of Putin or his war, and she quickly went out and condemned him in social media.
Still, the transphobic narratives of “gender critical” TERFs like Rowling are echoing the arguments made by the nationalist extreme right, both in the USA and in Russia. This is why Putin thinks embracing Rowling makes sense.
And that should make the alarm bells go off in “gender critical” circles. They are on the same side as Putin in the war against gender diversity. They are both defending the binary status quo of a patriarchal society. They are all causing women and children immense suffering. It is time to stop this madness.
