If you are an American citizen, this is the day you vote for the whole world

Democracy is standing on a precipice, and what happens tonight in the US may strengthen or destroy everything the LGBTQ movement has achieved world wide so far.

For those who are not American and continue to believe in compassion and the respect for diversity, what is happening in the US is a nightmare.

If America falls to the Fascists, the chances of protecting LGBTQ and other marginalized groups in the rest of the world becomes smaller. That is why any sane, open minded and compassionate American with the right to vote must go out and vote today (unless they have already done so).

The last time we saw something similar, in the 1930s and the 1940s, democracy prevailed in the US, which meant that the country could play an important role in the defeat of Fascism in Europe and Asia.

If Trump and his racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic and xenophobic tribe win tonight, Vladimir Putin will be encouraged to attack more in Europe. He is now actively persecuting queer and trans people in Russia.

Extremists in countries like France and Germany will intensify their attempts at turning back the clock, and more moderate politicians will find it “sensible” to make compromises with the extremists, selling out trans and queer people in the process.

You do not have to agree with the Democrats to vote for them. You do not have to love Kamala Harris to vote blue. But if you want to take part in an open and fair election ever again (and in that way open the door to constructive change in the future) you have to vote.

You will be voting for all of us.
